Community Profile

In 1987, the John Clifford Linklater Memorial Centre was constructed to hold the Mathias Colomb Cree Nation Administrationoffice, restaurant, Laundromat, hotel, convenience store, recreation booth andpost office.

 

Education

First Nation members attend the Saskatchewan School (First Nation operated). Theschool offers levels K4-S4 with and enrolment of 562. First Nation members alsoattend schools off the reserve.

 

Emergency Services

Health Care

The Mathias Colomb HealthAuthority has an Executive Director, Assistant Finance and support staff, tworesident registered nurses, and public health nurse, three community healthrepresentatives, a dental therapists and three NADAP workers

 Police

The Mathias Colomb Cree Nationemploys three local First Nation constables. Surveillance of the community isdone with the local police vehicle. An RCMP detachment Centre operates on an 18hour basis with two police officers on duty. The RCMP have their own policevehicles.

Fire Protection

The Mathias Colomb Cree Nationhas one fire chief and two 10 person volunteer fire fighting squads trained forbasic fire fighting services. Also available are two fire trucks, both properlyequipped. The piped water system also has fire hydrants.

 

Infrastructure

Water supply

The community has a watertreatment plant that chlorinates the water and is piped to 276 homes andcommunity facilities. There are 18 houses that have cisterns and two housesthat have no service.

Electricity

Service is provided by landline.

Sewage Disposal

There are 276 houses with pipedservice: 18 houses with trucked septic service and 2 houses with no services.Most buildings are connected to the community sewage system. A contracted(private) sewer truck is utilized for the few structures outside the system. Atwo-celled lagoon is being replaced with a sewage treatment plant.

Roads

Mathias Colomb is no accessible by all weather roads. Agravel road connects the community to the train station and airport.

Postal Service

VIA Rail brings mail three times a week for pick up at theMissinippi Complex Centre Post Office.

Communications

§        The community receives CBC North AM and TV (CBWT)and a country music FM station out of th The Pas. The community operates asatellite dish and retransmits the Sports Network, a movie channel, a Detroit affiliate US Network station and ITV out of Edmonton.

§        Fulltelephone services are provided by Manitoba Telephone System.

 

Transportation

The community enjoys a winterroad for approximately 3 months. A 3,000 foot airstrip is serviced by scheduledflights of Calm Air out of Thompson. Mathias Colomb Cree Nation owns Beaver airservices, which is utilized by everyone in the community. VIA Rail runs onMondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to LynnLake and returns to ThePas on alternate days.
